George Harrison was born on 25 February 1943 at 12 Arnold Grove, Wavertree. The youngest of Harry and Louise Harrison's three children, George attended the same junior school, Dovedale Road Primary, as John Lennon. In 1950 the family moved to Upton Green in Speke and it was here that George picked up his first guitar.

George was the only Beatle not affected by death or divorce during his childhood. He did reasonably well at school, however, like the other Beatles he lost interest upon the arrival of the skiffle craze. Surprisingly, playing the guitar did not come naturally to George and worked very hard practising. George was introduced to the Quarrymen by Paul, his older school friend, however, John was at first reluctant to pay any attention to a boy three years his junior. George's audition was enough to impress John and he soon became lead guitarist.

George always valued his privacy and became frustrated by intrusions in his personal life once the Beatles became famous. Such intrusions were no more evident when in an incident outside the Cavern, George received a black eye from a fan, unhappy with the sacking of Pete Best. Early Beatles photographs show George with his face discreetly positioned to hide the blemish.

As a song writer, George was always in the shadows of the Lennon-McCartney partnership and it would be several years before he could establish his talents. In 1964 George formed his own music publishing company 'Mornyork Ltd' which became 'Harrisongs Ltd' several months later.

During the filming of A Hard Day's Night in 1964, George met Pattie Boyd an extra in the film. The couple married two years later in 1966. By this time Geroge had shown an interest in Indian music and culture and began experimenting with the sitar which was used in 'Norwegian Wood'.

During the last years of the Beatles, George became frustrated. His songwriting was not featured as much as he would have liked on Beatle's records. In January 1969 during the recording of 'Let It Be' he announced that he was leaving the band, seemingly tired of Paul's attempts to lead the band. There is evidence of such tense scenes on the Album in which George can be clearly heard saying, "Look, I'll play whatever you want me to play. Or I won't play at all. Whatever it it that will you please you, I'll do it."

In October 1969 George's songwriting talent was confirmed with the success of his first A-Side Beatles single 'Something'. The song is amongst the most covered Beatles songs and described by Frank Sinatra as his favourite Beatles composition. When the Beatles split up George was able to unleash a back catalogue of material. George performed several times in concert during the seventies but soon tired and instead turned his attention to religion. George and Pattie divorced and Pattie married George's good friend Eric Clapton, however, George and Eric remained friends. Following the birth of his son Dhani, George married Olivia in 1978 who had been his office secretary since 1974.

In 1988 George re-emerged with a new album 'Cloud Nine' which was a huge success and he later joined The Travelling Wilburys consisting of Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne and Roy Orbison.

Following traumatic years with cancer treatment, George Harrison passed away on 29 November 2001.
