For several years O'Connor would teach during the day and entertain in the local nightclubs in the evenings. As his reputation and popularity spread, he had to make a decision. Working until the early hours were taking it's toll on his teaching and so, with bookings of up to twelve months, he chose entertainment.

In 1974 he took the plunge and never looked back. He appeared on Opportunity Knocks, winning three times and within a year he was hosting a television series 'Wednesday at Eight'. 'The Tom O'Connor Show' followed shortly after and then he achieved the ultimate accolade at the time, an appearance in the Royal Variety Show at the London Palladium.

Other television offers arrived in the form of shows such as, 'Name That Tune', 'Zodiac' and 'Cross Wits'. Despite his television success, O'Connor continued to work in theatre in top resorts throughout the country.

An accomplished golfer, O'Connor published his first book, 'From The Wood To The Trees' in 1992 and it's success prompted subsequent titles.
