BADFINGER

Badfinger were a largely unknown band who wrote the Harry Nilson classic 'Without You' for which writers Pete Ham and Tom Evans received little recognition. The band were a combination of two earlier Mersey Beat bands and were discovered in London by the Beatles road manager, Mal Evans. They were signed to Apple Records and enjoyed success with their biggest hit, 'Come and Get It'. Following financial problems, tragedy followed in 1975 when Ham hanged himself, Evans also took his own life in 1983.

THE REAL THING

After appearing on Opportunity Knocks, The Real Thing were signed up by record bosses and had several Top Ten hits including; 'You To Me Are Everything' and 'Can't Get By Without You' which were re-released in the mid-80's with great success. The band were the biggest-selling British black soul group of the 1970s and 1980s.

ECHO AND THE BUNNYMEN

Probably the only band in the world to get their title from a drum machine, Echo (the drummer) and the Bunnymen formed in 1978. They had several hit singles including 'People Are Strange' a haunting song which has been used on television and film soundtracks. By this time, the drum machine had been replaced by Peter De Freitas who was tragically killed in a road accident less than ten years later.

TEARDROP EXPLODES

Although not born in Liverpool, Julian Cope led Teardrop Explodes in in 1978 and went onto have several hits before they split in 1983. Cope formed the band in 1978 taking their name from a panel in a Marvel comic book, the premiere lineup of the Teardrop Explodes also featured guitarist Mick Finkler and drummer Gary Dwyer as well as keyboardist Paul Simpson, with whom Cope previously played in the short-lived A Shallow Madness.

CHINA CRISIS

China Crisis from Kirkby formed in 1979 but were not noticed until 1982/ 'Wishful Thinking' probably their best remembered song and first Top Ten hit was followed by 'Black Man Ray' and 'King In A Catholic Style'. Although still a part of the Liverpool music scene, the band have not been able to recapture earlier success.

ELVIS COSTELLO

Born Declan MacManus in 1955 but better known as Elvis Costello. Hits such as 'Oliver's Army' and 'Veronica' amongst others established Costello as a respected figure amongst fellow musicians. He has worked with Paul McCartney, Roy Orbison and Burt Bacharach. Alan Bleasdale has used a lot of his work for televesion shows and even used him as an actor for Scully and the Film 'No Surrender'.
